I was almost afraid to open the door and walk inside. My business was beginning to suffer from all the drama keeping me from doing my job, and with the added bonus of Sea Bass losing his mind, I needed to be here more than ever instead of drinking margaritas while Jackson played bury the bone with two million dollars. It was almost ten a.m., so not only had I skipped work the day before, I was coming in late too. The thought of walking in there to face my employees’ admonishing glances was just icing on the cake of shame I was about to eat.

“Boss,” Abel said as I walked past him and headed for the computer.

No time like the present to see how much damage had actually been done. I pulled up the schedule and cringed from all the blank appointment slots on the calendar. Mouse’s schedule was full, but Abel could only work on clients under my supervision until I was satisfied that he’d earned his wings. That could take months.

“I canceled your clients,” he said as he walked up behind me. “Wasn’t sure if that emergency of yours would take another day.”

I shrugged off the sick feeling in my gut. It didn’t help my dilemma and only made me feel worse. “I need to find that Help Wanted sign. I think I shoved it in the desk in the back.”

Abel looked surprised. “You shittin’ me, boss?”

“Bills need to be paid, Abel. If I don’t have employees, I don’t have customers.” I closed the schedule and glanced at Mouse, who was working on a client. “We could use another set of hands around here anyway, even if Sea Bass comes back.”

Abel seemed a little uncomfortable, and I realized what must have been going through his mind.

“Don’t worry, Abel, you’re still working on clients. And you’ll have seniority over anyone new I bring in here.”

He nodded, clearly relieved he wasn’t being relegated back to full-time apprentice.

Mouse glanced up from her client to look at me. She had that usual neutral stare on her face, but there was a hint of judgment in her eyes. She’d been taking the brunt of the work since Sea Bass had his meltdown, and now I was slacking off too. I made a mental note to have a talk with her after we closed that night, to let her know I appreciated the extra help.

I was heading for the coffee machine when Mouse finished her client’s tattoo. She wiped the excess ink from the woman’s skin and told her she could stand up and take a look in the mirror. She’d been lying facedown while Mouse worked on her.

Climbing off the table, she shook her hair and sent a wave of strawberry blond cascading down her perfectly toned back. “How does it look, Katie?” she asked, pulling all that gorgeous hair aside. Kara turned around to look at me before walking over to the full-length mirror to see for herself.

Mouse glanced to me, her mouth hanging open the way it always did when something had her undivided attention.
